A functioning door lock is one of the essential items listed in NRS 118A.380. If the landlord must supply it and willfully or negligently fails to, causing the home to become unfit for habitation, give written notice. If the landlord does not fix it or use best efforts within 48 hours (not counting Saturday, Sunday or legal holidays), you may, among other remedies, get the item yourself and deduct the reasonable cost from rent, recover damages, withhold rent during the noncompliance, or get comparable housing (NRS 118A.380).
